Tangent Design Group Transforms Porsche 911 into an Urban Safari Vehicle
Chicago-based Tangent Design Group has undertaken a remarkable transformation of a 992-generation Porsche 911 Carrera 4, converting the quintessential sports car into an adventurous "Urban Safari" machine. This ambitious project, initiated in 2019, involved elevating the vehicle's ride height by three inches, fitting it with aggressive off-road tires, and adorning it with a front bull bar and roof-mounted recovery equipment. The result is a visually striking fusion of performance and rugged utility, challenging the traditional perception of the 911's capabilities.
The journey to create the Urban Safari began with a 2021 Carrera 4, specifically chosen for its all-wheel-drive system and distinctive Paint-to-Sample Black Olive finish. Tangent's goal was to push the boundaries of the standard 992 without caricaturing its rally car potential. The design process was a blend of cutting-edge technology and traditional craftsmanship. Engineers meticulously 3D-scanned various sections of the car, including bumpers, fenders, and wheel wells, to create precise CAD models. These digital blueprints then informed the creation of new components, such as widened arches and a distinctive ducktail rear.
Physical prototyping played a crucial role in the development. Large-format 3D printers produced full-scale parts, allowing designers to directly assess their integration and visual impact on the vehicle. Even the wheel designs were initially printed on paper and evaluated alongside the 911 before being sent for final production in forged aluminum by Brixton Forged. This iterative process, combining digital precision with tangible evaluation, ensured that the modifications were both functional and aesthetically harmonious with the original Porsche design.
The most impactful modification, yet deceptively simple in concept, is the three-inch suspension lift. This custom-engineered solution retains the factory suspension while providing ample clearance for the significantly larger off-road tires. For a vehicle renowned for its low-slung stance, this elevation drastically alters the 911's visual presence, emphasizing the wheel arches and giving the body a more assertive, narrowed appearance. Integrating this lift with the Porsche's complex electronic systems presented a considerable engineering challenge, highlighting the team's expertise in modern automotive customization.
Beyond the structural alterations, Tangent injected a dose of personality into the Urban Safari. The Black Olive paint, which subtly shifts between deep green and near-black, is complemented by vibrant yellow graphics running along the sides. Amber lights mounted on the bull bar and a roof rack equipped with recovery boards and a Gerber axe further underscore its adventurous spirit. The inclusion of a full ducktail at the rear, reminiscent of classic rally cars, and the deliberate choice of a donor car with a rear windshield wiper, hints at the vehicle's readiness for challenging, muddy terrains beyond the urban jungle.
The Urban Safari's significance lies not only in its striking appearance but also in its origin. As an industrial design consultancy, Tangent approached this automotive project with the same rigorous methodology applied to product and transportation design.
