Drawing inspiration from Henry David Thoreau's philosophy of self-sufficiency as articulated in his work 'Walden', this 120 square meter dwelling, completed in 2023, was conceived as a temporary residence for a family engaged in agricultural pursuits. The project prioritizes thermal comfort, integrates uncomplicated technologies, and champions local craftsmanship, reflecting a profound respect for its natural environment and the community that brought it to life.

The architects at Matéria Base meticulously planned the cabin's structure to ensure optimal thermal performance, a critical consideration given its rural setting. By incorporating passive design strategies and selecting materials with natural insulating properties, the cabin remains comfortable throughout the seasons, minimizing the need for artificial heating or cooling. The WildSumaco Biological Station, positioned at the foot of the Sumaco volcano and within the initial protected zone of the Sumaco Napo Galeras National Park, represents a crucial intersection where the Andes mountains converge with the Amazon's humid expanse. Here, the surrounding forest is not merely a backdrop but an active element influencing climate, acoustics, light, and scale. Crafting a research facility in such a sensitive ecosystem presented unique challenges and opportunities. The design philosophy of Caá Porá Arquitectura for the WildSumaco Research Pavilion centered on deep engagement with the site's inherent characteristics. This sprawling 5,000 square foot property, brought to life by A Parallel Architecture, showcases a sophisticated interplay of robust and delicate elements, creating a living space that feels both grand and intimately connected to the landscape.

Details of the Exceptional Residence

Completed in the year 2025, the Terrace Mountain Residence is a remarkable achievement in residential architecture, located in the serene West Lake Hills of the United States. Spearheaded by lead architects Eric Barth and Ryan Burke, the project's innovative design centers around two distinct, yet interconnected, architectural volumes. One volume, a substantial pavilion, is firmly rooted in the earth, constructed from resilient stone and concrete, reflecting the stability of the bluff it occupies. Contrasting this is a lighter, more ethereal volume, a glass and wood box that boldly cantilevers over the terrain, supported by elegant, slender steel columns. This cantilevered structure creates an awe-inspiring visual effect, appearing to float above the landscape, offering unparalleled panoramic views of the undulating hills and the distant Austin skyline. The interior design, crafted by Allison Burke Interior Design, complements the architectural vision, ensuring that every space within the residence resonates with both functionality and aesthetic appeal. The construction was meticulously carried out by Arrowhead Construction, with structural engineering expertise provided by Fort Structures.
