A groundbreaking architectural marvel is set to transform Doha's MIA Park, as the visionary German artist Gerhard Richter, in collaboration with the renowned Selldorf Architects, unveils a permanent hexagonal gallery pavilion. This ambitious project, named the Doha Pavilion: Gerhard Richter, ingeniously translates Richter's iconic 'Strip paintings' into a three-dimensional, immersive space that visitors can physically explore. The pavilion is scheduled to open its doors to the public on November 20, 2026, adjacent to the esteemed Museum of Islamic Art, promising to be a significant addition to the city's cultural landscape.
Gerhard Richter's Vision Comes to Life in Doha
The genesis of this distinctive pavilion dates back to Richter's visit to Doha in 2013, a period when his 'Strip paintings' were undergoing conceptual development. Inspired by the city's rich architectural heritage and history, Richter envisioned a structure that could encapsulate various facets of his artistic process. He remarked that Doha provided the perfect and indeed, the sole appropriate location for his pavilion.
The exterior of the hexagonal pavilion is adorned with repeating printed patterns, directly derived from Richter's 2011 artist's book, 'Patterns.' These intricate designs originated from Richter's digital fragmentation of his 1990 work, 'Abstract Painting (724-4),' which was iteratively divided into thousands of vertical strips. Each strip was then mirrored and replicated to form horizontally symmetrical patterns, a technique that now wraps the building's facade.
Inside the pavilion, the artistic exploration deepens. Three large-scale 'Strip paintings' line the interior walls, pushing the visual boundaries of Richter's process. Each horizontal band within these works corresponds to an incredibly narrow slice of the original photograph, merely 0.08 millimeters wide. At the heart of the space stands the 'Strip Tower,' a freestanding sculpture specifically designed for the pavilion, which elevates the strips from the walls, allowing them to occupy the room in a new dimension.
Further enhancing the immersive experience, two floor-to-ceiling mirrors are strategically placed on the narrower walls between the paintings. Richter, who has incorporated mirrors into his art since the 1980s, utilizes them here to dynamically alter the viewer's perception as they navigate the space. Reflections of the paintings and visitors within them create an illusion of depth, making the compact interior appear to extend far beyond its actual dimensions. This interplay transforms the room into a unique blend of gallery and optical device.
The facade's repetitive symmetry subtly echoes the geometric patterns characteristic of Islamic art, where designs often extend beyond visible borders. Here, this artistic logic is reinterpreted through Richter's digital methods and scaled up to an architectural form. Completing the outdoor artistic statement, a stone sculpture titled 'Brunnen (Well)' is positioned directly outside the pavilion, extending the artistic narrative into MIA Park.
The Doha Pavilion's grand opening on November 20, 2026, will precede the inaugural Rubaiya Qatar, a new international visual arts quadrennial commencing the following day and running until April 30, 2027. With over 50 regional and international artists participating across various venues in Doha, Richter's pavilion is poised to become a permanent landmark, embodying a lasting legacy of artistic innovation in the city.
