Tela Architettura has undertaken a remarkable transformation, converting an abandoned concrete shell in the scenic Ostuni countryside into a harmonious and tranquil residence. The design philosophy centered on preserving the existing structure's integrity while introducing elements that foster a seamless dialogue between the dwelling and its natural surroundings. The result is a home that embodies both restraint and permanence, where every detail contributes to a sense of calm and continuity.

Countryside Oasis: A Harmonious Blend of Structure and Nature in Ostuni

In the heart of Ostuni's picturesque countryside, the architectural firm Tela Architettura embarked on a visionary project, breathing new life into an incomplete rural dwelling. Instead of demolition, the architects chose to embrace the unfinished concrete shell, transforming it into "Casa nell'agro di Ostuni." This decision laid the groundwork for a design rooted in principles of subtle precision and enduring quality. The intervention focused on redefining the interior layout and thoughtfully expanding the existing volume. This expansion incorporated materials meticulously chosen to reflect the local landscape, such as natural lime plaster and sand-colored microcement, which now form a continuous, tactile skin throughout the property. Expansive glazed openings serve to dissolve the barriers between the indoor sanctuary and the verdant outdoors, inviting the serene countryside into the heart of the home. The flow of natural light is a cornerstone of the design; gentle northern light bathes the pale walls in an even glow, while the eastern facade captures the warmer hues of the morning sun. Iron window frames create sharp, delicate lines against the plaster, directing the gaze towards the majestic olive trees that punctuate the landscape. Within this meticulously crafted geometry, the richness of walnut doors and joinery introduces comforting warmth and texture, engaging both visual and tactile senses. The living room, designed around a central fireplace, features low horizontal planes that subtly define circulation paths and integrated furniture. A walnut screen at the entrance provides filtered light and spatial definition without imposing harsh divisions. The fluid expanse of the microcement floor is softened by natural fiber rugs, demarcating areas for relaxation and social gatherings. The muted brown tones of the wood elements echo the iron details, fostering an atmosphere of intimate tranquility. The private sleeping quarters comprise three bedrooms, each with its own en-suite bathroom and large windows that frame breathtaking vistas of the Apulian landscape. These windows are carefully positioned cuts in the thick walls, allowing ample light while ensuring privacy and shade. To the east, a delicate pergola and the natural canopy of the olive trees mitigate the summer heat, casting enchanting patterns of filtered light. Externally, the house is seamlessly integrated into the topography through dry-stone walls crafted from local stone. These terraced layers guide visitors through the site via ramps and steps. Mediterranean vegetation, with its diverse shades of green and grey, encircles the perimeter. At the property's edge, an infinity pool, finished in anthracite microcement, extends towards the distant sea, its still surface mirroring the tranquil tones of the surrounding land.

This project serves as a profound reminder of architecture's power to not only create beauty but also to resurrect and reinterpret existing structures with respect for their history and environment. It underscores the value of thoughtful design in fostering a deep connection between human habitation and the natural world, proving that sustainability and aesthetic excellence can coexist harmoniously.
