Twilight House: A Serene Oasis for Intergenerational Living in India

Nestled in the heart of Andhra Pradesh, India, the 'Twilight House,' a magnificent creation by Spacefiction Studio, reimagines residential living as a tranquil haven. This sprawling 650-square-meter dwelling is a testament to thoughtful design, offering a serene sanctuary for aging parents, harmoniously integrated with nature, while gracefully accommodating visits from their beloved children and grandchildren.
A Symphony of Light and Space: Unveiling Twilight House's Architectural Brilliance
In Nellore, India, Spacefiction Studio, founded by Baba Sashank and Vindhya Guduru in 2015, has masterfully completed the Twilight House, a 650-square-meter residence. Designed with a deep understanding of multi-generational living, the home provides a nurturing environment for elderly parents while fostering connections with visiting family members. The architectural marvel is strategically divided into public and private realms, seamlessly woven around a central, verdant courtyard.
This hidden oasis, shielded from external gazes by towering walls of burnt-clay brick, boasts strategically placed perforations, windows, and shutters. These elements not only invite gentle breezes but also orchestrate a dance of light and shadow, creating captivating visual narratives throughout the day. The studio emphasizes the profound impact of this design, noting how the courtyard's lush greenery attracts small birds, fostering a vibrant ecosystem. The innovative use of skylights above the prayer room bathes the space in divine light, while the ever-shifting patterns of light filtering through the gridded concrete ceiling and brickwork create an enchanting atmosphere.
The layout encourages interaction with nature, requiring residents to traverse the central courtyard to move between living areas and bedrooms, either via the ground floor or an elegant first-floor bridge accessed by a sculptural white metal staircase. The living wing, characterized by minimalist white surfaces, features a spacious kitchen and dining area that extends onto a narrow terrace adorned with cascading plants from the rooftop. A large pyramidal skylight illuminates this space, complemented by a smaller circular one above the prayer area, thoughtfully enclosed by folding glass doors. The opposing wing houses two bedrooms on the ground floor, flanking a private double-height lounge, with two additional bedrooms upstairs, accessible by both stairs and a lift, ensuring future accessibility.
The exterior of this wing is distinguished by a thick, textured wall with deep cut-outs, some embracing shaded windows and others supporting graceful trailing plants. This design philosophy extends beyond the Twilight House, as evidenced by Spacefiction Studio's previous work, including the Rainbow International School extension in Nellore, which prioritized natural light, air, and greenery in its classroom designs.
Reflections on Design for Well-being and Connection
The Twilight House by Spacefiction Studio offers a compelling vision for modern residential architecture, particularly for multi-generational families. It underscores the profound importance of integrating nature into our living spaces, demonstrating how thoughtful design can enhance well-being, foster tranquility, and strengthen familial bonds. The emphasis on natural light, ventilation, and a central green space creates an environment that not only promotes physical health but also enriches the spiritual and emotional lives of its inhabitants. This project serves as a powerful reminder that architecture, at its best, is not merely about constructing buildings, but about crafting experiences and nurturing human connections within the embrace of nature.
