Far from being an afterthought, the integration of non-human inhabitants is becoming a foundational principle, redefining the very essence of architectural design and construction.

Detailing the Innovations in Multi-Species Architecture

For centuries, the primary function of architecture has been to create defined spaces, separating human environments from the natural world. Walls have traditionally marked boundaries, and roofs provided shelter, focusing on human comfort and protection. One pioneering example is ChartierDalix’s School of Science and Biodiversity in Boulogne-Billancourt, France, completed in 2014. Taking this concept further, i29 and Namo Architecture's Buitenverblijf Nest in the Hoge Veluwe, Netherlands, reimagines a small holiday home as an enlarged birdhouse. Its striking black silhouette, elevated on slender legs, integrates three facade layers that create deep nesting spaces. Concealed cavities behind the cladding offer refuge for birds and bats, while the elevated floor provides additional occupancy areas. This design establishes a fascinating dichotomy: a compact 55-square-meter retreat for humans surrounded by a hidden network of 'rooms' inaccessible to its human residents, dedicated to wildlife.

In a similarly innovative vein, BIG’s Biosphere at Treehotel in Harads, Sweden, makes its commitment to multi-species accommodation unmistakably clear. The glazed hotel room is enveloped by a spherical cloud composed of 350 birdhouses, developed in collaboration with Swedish ornithologist Ulf Öhman. Situated in a suburban area where development had previously disrupted the natural ravine system, the house actively restores a section of this vital ecosystem. Rainwater collected from the roof and greywater from household use are channeled into an elliptical reconstructed rambla, regulated by advanced sensors. The house's rooms gracefully curve around this living landscape, demonstrating a profound connection between domestic life and the continuously evolving natural environment. Within approximately a year of re-establishing its hydrothermal conditions, the site has witnessed the return of a variety of vegetation and wildlife.

Expanding on this philosophy, Jaque’s Reggio School in Madrid integrates similar principles through its material choices. Roughly 80 percent of its exterior is coated in a thick layer of projected cork, meticulously designed with an irregular surface to accumulate organic material and foster microbial, vegetal, and animal life. This cork 'skin' serves not merely for aesthetics or insulation but as a physical catalyst for biological colonization, creating new footholds for diverse life forms.

Finally, MVRDV’s De Oosterlingen in Amsterdam extends the multi-species concept to an entire residential block. This development, comprising seven distinct buildings, each with its own architectural character, incorporates specific provisions for bees, butterflies, swallows, sparrows, and bats. With structures like the 17-story Swallow Tower and the Beekeeper building, which utilizes dry-stacked brick, each element is designed to offer varied ecological opportunities.
