The "Sharp" Kayak: A Fusion of Aluminum and Cork









Emerging from a new press brake and France's lake-rich Morvan region, the "Sharp" kayak, conceived by Guillaume Bloget during his residency at Rhizome, presents a novel approach to watercraft construction. This innovative vessel is ingeniously crafted from folded aluminum sheets and natural cork, a design born from the workshop's acquisition of metal-shaping machinery. Rather than mimicking conventional molded plastic or composite kayaks, the project champions the folding technique as both a structural foundation and an artistic statement, integrating form and function through this unique methodology.
The kayak's hydrodynamic form was meticulously engineered to optimize forward motion from each paddle stroke, minimizing energy loss. This performance objective guided a rigorous iterative design process, involving numerous half-scale models that were individually tested in water to refine the hull's geometry. The culmination of this development is a design that maintains distinct, angular facets above the waterline, while seamlessly transitioning to a smooth, efficient profile for effortless glides through the water. Additionally, the kayak's structure is entirely self-supporting, formed by the inherent stiffness of its folded aluminum, which creates a double-walled, unsinkable hull, transforming simple creases into essential ribs and surfaces into robust components. Within the cockpit, a cork seat provides a comfortable interface between the paddler and the boat, its soft, rounded contours thoughtfully juxtaposed against the kayak's angular aluminum shell.
