This innovative vessel is ingeniously crafted from folded aluminum sheets and natural cork, a design born from the workshop's acquisition of metal-shaping machinery. Rather than mimicking conventional molded plastic or composite kayaks, the project champions the folding technique as both a structural foundation and an artistic statement, integrating form and function through this unique methodology.

The kayak's hydrodynamic form was meticulously engineered to optimize forward motion from each paddle stroke, minimizing energy loss. This performance objective guided a rigorous iterative design process, involving numerous half-scale models that were individually tested in water to refine the hull's geometry. The culmination of this development is a design that maintains distinct, angular facets above the waterline, while seamlessly transitioning to a smooth, efficient profile for effortless glides through the water. This included bricks from older buildings, concrete blocks from recent developments, utility infrastructure components, and reclaimed timber. A 'stacked-and-strapped' system holds disparate materials together, such as bricks and concrete blocks, forming supports for benches and columns. These elements are secured with straps rather than traditional mortar, enabling easy disassembly without damaging the components. Similarly, salvaged timber beams and columns are joined using bolts, ensuring that each piece can be recovered and re-purposed once the installation's lifespan concludes. This flexible assembly process acknowledges the inherent variations in reclaimed materials, from differing dimensions to varied conditions, and incorporates these inconsistencies into the design process.

This commitment to flexibility is crucial given the temporary nature of the Waterfront Neighbourhood Space. Inaugurated on July 4, 2026, the installation is situated within the expansive 39.6-hectare Ookwemin Minising development, bordered by the new Biidaasige Park and wetlands, which are integral to Toronto's flood-protection strategy. This temporary pop-up will serve the community through the late fall, providing essential amenities like shade, seating, and versatile space for events and spontaneous play as the surrounding neighborhood evolves. The visual narrative is complemented by a soundscape created by Stephanos Giakoumakis, which evolves with the Passion's progression, enriching the sensory experience within the chapel. This integration of sound enhances the atmosphere without detracting from the monochrome frescoes, proving that even in a space of minimalist design and limited color, profound spiritual and artistic engagement is possible.
