This innovative piece centers around a specialized machine that meticulously shaves bonito flakes, transforming this everyday process into a mesmerizing, continuous kinetic display.

The Delicate Dance of Bonito Flakes: A Symphony of Lightness and Motion

Central to Japanese dashi, a fundamental broth in countless dishes, katsuobushi is produced from dried, fermented, and smoked bonito. Within this exhibit, ultra-fine flakes, approximately 0.01 mm thin, are released after being freshly shaved. Their ethereal lightness and delicate nature cause them to gracefully drift and descend in an unpredictable, fluid motion as they interact with the air.

The Rhythmic Cycle of Accumulation and Release: An Artful Mechanism

Below the gently falling flakes, a circular platform is strategically placed to gather them. As the quantity of collected flakes gradually increases, the platform subtly begins to tilt, much like a traditional shishi-odoshi (deer scarer). Upon reaching a predetermined weight, the amassed flakes are released, initiating a new cycle. This ingenious system establishes a perpetual interaction between the scattering, gathering, and subsequent release of the material.
