Taipei faces a critical need for housing rejuvenation, with a significant portion of its buildings over three decades old and many predating modern seismic standards. Taiwan's 2024 Disaster-Prevention Urban Renewal policy offers incentives for the reconstruction of vulnerable properties, and the Songshan project perfectly aligns with this objective by placing community members at the forefront of the redevelopment process. OMA's design emerged from extensive dialogue with the current inhabitants, underscoring the challenge of integrating contemporary needs with the preservation of the neighborhood's valued attributes. The proposed architectural scheme transforms the site into two 24-story structures, crafted from four interconnected vertical volumes. This innovative design incorporates stepped and shifted massing to mitigate the visual impact of the new development, create dynamic openings, and optimize natural light and ventilation within the apartments. This approach cleverly reinterprets the existing domestic layouts, ensuring continuity with the residents' familiar living patterns rather than discarding them entirely, thereby fostering a sense of belonging within a denser environment.


A core element of OMA's strategy involves maximizing the interstitial spaces within and around the residential buildings. A comprehensive network of shared amenities is planned across various levels, fostering strong connections both within the towers and with the broader neighborhood. These communal areas include a second-floor semi-open platform integrated with the tree canopy and adjacent parks, offering spaces for recreation and social interaction. The ground floor will feature a welcoming lobby and retail spaces, designed with a receding facade to enhance engagement with nearby schools and park pathways. A groundbreaking project titled 'After the Last Sip' is pioneering the transformation of ordinary tea and coffee refuse into sophisticated design elements. Spearheaded by a trio of Taiwanese designers—Chao-Chun Kung, Ching-Yu Lin, and Chen-Yang Chang—with spatial conceptualization by Chih-Han Liu, this initiative redefines how we perceive and utilize waste. By collecting used tea leaves from London's bubble tea establishments and spent coffee grounds from local cafes, the team processes these organic byproducts. The residues undergo drying, grinding, and blending with PLA, followed by meticulous material evaluations to understand the impact of particle dimension, blend composition, and mixture ratios on attributes such as color, tactile quality, transparency, and structural integrity. Through the application of advanced parametric design and large-scale robotic 3D printing at Fab.Pub, these inventive composites are sculpted into distinctive furniture, illumination fixtures, and artistic sculptures. A deliberate choice was made to preserve the visible marks of their creation—the layered structures, embedded particles, and unique textures—allowing both the material's origin and the manufacturing journey to be appreciated.

The innovative spirit behind the 'After the Last Sip' project is embodied by the collaborative efforts of Chao-Chun Kung, Ching-Yu Lin, and Chen-Yang Chang. Chao-Chun Kung’s creation, 'CHA / 茶,' draws inspiration from Taiwan's rich tea-drinking customs, employing tea not only as a raw material but also as a cultural symbol and the foundation for a bespoke parametric system rooted in the Chinese character for tea. Ching-Yu Lin’s 'Undetermined Shore' utilizes coffee-ground composites to fashion textured, stratified surfaces, reminiscent of Taiwan's dynamic coastline. Meanwhile, Chen-Yang Chang’s 'Nexus Bloom' and 'Unfolding Bloom' delve into continuous parametric geometries, realized through digital design and 3D printing techniques. The exhibition not only features the completed works but also provides insight into the development process, displaying material samples and evidence of the extensive testing, challenges, and breakthroughs encountered throughout the project. This compelling display is scheduled to be held at Fab.Pub in East London from September 12th to 18th, 2026, coinciding with the London Design Festival.
