SOIA Design embarked on an ambitious project with Mamuli, aiming to capture the essence of Georgian identity within a restaurant setting. Their objective was to translate the country's rich cultural character into an engaging space without resorting to cliché visual motifs or literal interpretations of historical elements. The outcome is an interior that thrives on subtle nuance and sophisticated integration, presenting a welcoming and vibrant atmosphere in Krasnodar where echoes of tradition, contemporary artistry, and the core principles of hospitality blend seamlessly.

A significant challenge guided the initial concept: to create a space that felt distinctly Georgian yet appealed to a modern, global clientele. The design needed to stand out in a competitive hospitality market without adopting predictable ethnic themes. Functionality was also paramount, requiring the space to adapt effortlessly from intimate dining experiences and family gatherings to wine tastings and broader cultural events, all while maintaining a coherent and memorable identity. SOIA Design's founders, Anton and Ekaterina Baklan, embraced this as an opportunity to reinterpret cultural narratives. They meticulously extracted fundamental ideas, forms, textures, and associations from Georgian culture, transforming them into innovative architectural details rather than replicating historical designs.

The restaurant's identity is conveyed through a meticulously curated collection of details rather than a single dominant aesthetic. A warm, earthy color palette forms the fundamental backdrop, while subtle gold plasterwork gently reflects light, adding a touch of elegance without being ostentatious. Above the dining areas, bespoke chandeliers draw inspiration from the organic shape of Georgian beehives, transforming a cultural reference into a sculptural focal point. Other elements are intentionally more subdued; for instance, dark balusters, reminiscent of peppercorns, subtly introduce the culinary heritage of Georgian spices. Helen & Hard Architects' Cabin Sande: A Sustainable Norwegian Retreat Integrated with Nature

Helen & Hard Architects have brought to life Cabin Sande, a remarkable 112-square-meter dwelling nestled on a rugged promontory in Randaberg, Norway. This unique retreat, meticulously crafted by studio principals Reinhard Kropf and Siv Helene Stangeland over a decade, stands as a testament to their vision of integrating architecture with the natural world. Eighteen entire spruce trees serve as the core structural elements, their expansive root systems gracefully unfurling across the ceiling, forming an organic connection between columns and beams. This innovative design not only provides the building's skeleton but also imbues the interior with a distinctive, earthy character, replacing an older structure while adhering to local planning stipulations for size and height.

The architectural inspiration for Cabin Sande draws deeply from Norway's rich shipbuilding heritage, echoing techniques dating back to the Viking Age. Ancient shipwrights skillfully employed naturally curved sections where tree trunks met roots to enhance the structural integrity of wooden vessels. Following this tradition, each spruce tree destined for Cabin Sande was meticulously excavated with its root system intact, then cleaned and air-dried for an eight-month period. Subsequently, these unique forms were digitally scanned, enabling robots to precisely mill custom joints directly from the roots. This advanced fabrication method allowed each tree to be seamlessly integrated into the cabin's column-and-beam framework, ensuring both structural soundness and a celebration of natural irregularities.

The cabin's design features a distinctive fan-shaped layout, with four rows of columns that gracefully expand towards the western horizon. This strategic orientation directs the main living area towards the vast expanse of the Atlantic, offering an unobstructed panoramic view through a horizontal opening spanning over nine meters. At the opposite end, the structure tapers towards an entrance that faces a tranquil garden, welcoming the soft morning sunlight. A continuous line of sight extends through the entire cabin, connecting the vibrant vegetation at one end with the boundless ocean at the other, creating a profound sense of connection to the surrounding environment.

To withstand the often-harsh Atlantic weather, the roof extends beyond the glazed perimeter, providing essential shelter. Hidden tension cables and springs offer additional support to the cantilevered structure. The extensive use of continuous glass throughout the cabin allows the ever-changing coastal light and conditions to remain a constant visual presence. A stone plinth, constructed from local rock, anchors the cabin to its site, while the planted roof mimics the natural topography, ensuring the building remains discreetly integrated into the headland.

Within the broad central area of the cabin, the main living space unfolds, flanked by a kitchen on one side and two distinct workspaces on the other. One of these workspaces is elevated by half a level above the bathroom, introducing a subtle shift in elevation that enriches the compact interior without segmenting the overall open plan. The spruce timber structure extends beyond its foundational role, ingeniously forming integrated bookshelves, benches, room dividers, and window frames. This cohesive use of timber throughout the design ensures that the cabin presents itself as a singular, harmonious piece of craftsmanship, rather than a mere assemblage of separate components.

Towards the sea-facing side, the expansive glass opening masterfully draws the distant horizon deep into the interior, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor. In contrast, the branching timber elements in the side zones create more intimate nooks for sitting and working, maintaining the central area's open vista towards the water. Despite robotic milling for precise joinery, the natural irregularities of the root forms remain distinctly visible, ensuring that each of the eighteen trees retains its unique identity within the finished cabin. This approach of digital fabrication, which embraces and highlights these natural imperfections, results in a structure that is both precise and deeply connected to its organic origins.
