The Kyoto Minami Kaikan, after five and a half decades of operation, has found a novel location within a former bank edifice constructed in 1993. For this significant relocation and refurbishment, Tato Architects, led by Yo Shimada, initiated their design process with a profoundly simple yet insightful observation. Unlike the emissive nature of a computer monitor, a cinema screen functions by receiving and reflecting projected light back to its viewers. This fundamental concept was then extrapolated and integrated throughout the entire architectural scheme, with the incorporation of various elements such as mesh materials, metallic finishes, and other reflective surfaces, effectively transforming the building into a monumental, interactive screen.

A critical aspect of the transformation involved reconfiguring the entrance area to accommodate a more expansive space. This necessitated moving the main access point to the east side, occupying the former service entrance. The area previously designated for parking, directly adjacent to the thoroughfare, has been reimagined as a semi-public plaza. This space is thoughtfully landscaped with silver-hued foliage, a subtle visual homage to the classic 'silver screen', complemented by seating arrangements and a two-story loggia. Instead of confronting the bustling Kujo Street directly, the cinema now subtly recedes, establishing a transitional zone that acts as a buffer between the city's dynamic pace and the fantastical narratives unfolding within its walls.

Further enhancing the building's innovative design, all vertical circulation was strategically placed on the exterior of the existing structure, becoming an integral part of a new addition along the eastern facade to satisfy evacuation standards. Patrons ascend to the upper levels via an external staircase enveloped in suspended stainless-steel mesh, creating a sensation akin to moving behind a translucent projection surface. What could have been a mere functional requirement has been elevated into a prominent architectural feature, beckoning visitors upwards and drawing them further into the cinematic realm. Inside, this fascination with luminescence persists through the meticulous application of metallic textures, lustrous paint, and reflective ceilings, which masterfully intertwine silhouettes and ambient light with the building's form. The ground floor subtly echoes the heritage of the original Kyoto Minami Kaikan, reinterpreting characteristic features like its vibrant red vinyl flooring and mirrored ceiling. Ascending to the upper floors, this familiarity takes on a subtly surreal quality; an iridescent mesh ceiling, concentric tile patterns, and an exaggerated handrail subtly distort conventional architectural elements, prompting visitors to engage with the space in an unexpected way.
