Jeroen Spee Architecten's Villa Bilt Blends Seamlessly with Woodland Environment

In the village of Bilthoven, Utrecht, a remarkable dwelling known as Villa Bilt, conceived by Jeroen Spee Architecten, stands as a testament to harmonious coexistence with nature. The residence, enveloped by towering Scots Pine trees, employs light-toned brickwork and shimmering ceramic tiles to capture and amplify the interplay of sunlight and verdant tones from its sylvan surroundings. This architectural marvel seamlessly blends into its natural habitat, offering a unique living experience.
Jeroen Spee Architecten’s vision for Villa Bilt was to create a structure that ‘embraces’ its environment. The home's softly undulating contours are inspired by the forms of the tree trunks and the overarching canopies, ensuring that the building feels like an intrinsic part of the landscape rather than an imposition upon it. The founder, Jeroen Spee, emphasized that the fluid lines of the house intentionally engage with the positioning of the trees, paying homage to the existing terrain.
The heart of Villa Bilt is a magnificent double-height kitchen and dining area, which extends outwards to a patio and a garden complete with a swimming pool. The main bedroom and living spaces are strategically positioned to flank this outdoor terrace, creating a sense of enclosure and privacy. A slender roof section bridges these two wings, thoughtfully detached from the main structure to enhance the architectural flow.
A striking feature of the design is the use of lustrous ceramic tiles that adorn the southern wings and spill into the dining room. These tiles are instrumental in reflecting the dancing patterns of light and the rich green hues from the tree canopies, drawing the exterior beauty indoors. Complementing these are the light-colored bricks that form the exterior of Villa Bilt, chosen specifically to offer a gentle contrast to the earthy greens and browns of the natural environment.
Spee further elaborated on the careful placement of the home’s structural elements, explaining how they frame captivating views of the natural surroundings while simultaneously defining the functional rhythm of both interior and exterior spaces. He highlighted an indoor-outdoor atrium where a circular arrangement of ceramic tiles serves as a connective tissue between the inside and outside, fostering a profound sense of intimacy around the dining area, which truly functions as the home's focal point.
The interior design smartly contrasts the bright, south-facing dining area with the more secluded northern section of the house. Here, the entrance is organized around a dark timber staircase, nestled between a study and storage facilities. This area is brightened by a central wall of perforated brick, which internally features full-height operable windows, allowing for optimal natural air circulation. On the upper level, a balcony-like landing provides a vista over the dining area below, linking two bedroom wings with a central block of bathrooms to the north. This upper section also benefits from illumination provided by another segment of the perforated brickwork.
Jeroen Spee established his studio in 2025, building on his previous experience as a co-founder of Studio Prototype, where he contributed to projects like the self-built Edge House in Amsterdam. Villa Bilt exemplifies his studio's commitment to creating architecture that respects and integrates with its natural context, following a growing trend in the Netherlands for homes that blur the lines between indoor living and the natural world, as seen in other recent projects such as Villa MB by Tom Kneepkens, which aimed to unite living with nature.
