This architectural endeavor by Vi.architectuuratelier breathes new life into a venerable country estate, known as De Zwarte Fles, situated in the heart of Zwijnaarde village, near Ghent, Belgium. This comprehensive project meticulously marries the conservation of the ancient structure with the integration of a streamlined, modern office wing, featuring an elaborate facade. The outcome is a space that respectfully honors its past as a residence while accommodating the demands of a modern studio.

Dating back to 1616, the property bore the marks of its diverse history, having served as both a home and a bustling cafe-restaurant. Previous alterations often concealed imperfections rather than enhancing the building's architectural integrity, and extensive paving surrounded the structure, supporting outdoor seating. The recent overhaul aimed to reclaim the dwelling's intrinsic charm and reinstate its prominent position within the Zwijnaarde streetscape.

Vi.architectuuratelier's approach involved a delicate balance of careful preservation and strategic enhancements. Improved interior insulation boosts thermal efficiency, and new carpentry provides modern comfort. The windows' proportions, arrangement, and color palette were meticulously selected to align with historical aesthetics, ensuring a seamless visual flow from the village square. Inside, a thoughtful selection of materials cultivates a serene ambiance, with earthy tones and subtle textures contributing to a tranquil spatial experience. A central fireplace remains a focal point, integrated into an updated layout designed for everyday functionality. This dwelling was conceived for a couple transitioning from city life in Montreal, seeking a slower pace intertwined with the raw beauty of the coastline. The design thoughtfully allows the natural terrain to flow beneath, minimizing disruption to the existing ecosystem.

A Bridging Structure Amidst Nature's Embrace

As one approaches the property through the dense coastal woodlands, the residence gradually reveals itself amidst granite formations and sparse vegetation. The building extends gracefully between two elevated landforms, establishing a minimal footprint where it meets the ground. Omar Gandhi Architects conceptualized this home as a bridge, preserving the site's natural contours while framing expansive vistas towards the boundless horizon.

Elevated Living and Material Choices

The structure is supported by slender steel pillars, raising the main volume above the sand and stone, enabling indigenous grasses and moss to thrive undisturbed below.
