The Gorakhpur Farmhouse embodies a design philosophy deeply rooted in its environment, demonstrating a harmonious relationship between the built structure and the natural world. This architectural endeavor, conceived by DW5 Architects, is not an imposition on the landscape but rather an organic evolution from it, showcasing an intuitive response to the land, climate, and local craftsmanship. The design’s primary tenet was the complete preservation of the existing 20-year-old mango and teak orchard, ensuring that every tree remained untouched, thereby dictating the spatial organization, the formation of courtyards, and the intentional framing of scenic vistas.

This 5500 square foot residence, completed in 2024, is characterized by its meticulous integration with the natural setting. The careful placement of the structure respects the established trees, allowing them to become integral elements of the design, providing shade, privacy, and aesthetic beauty. The courtyards, formed by the strategic arrangement of building volumes around the trees, act as natural extensions of the living spaces, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor environments. This approach fosters a sense of tranquility and connection to nature, enhancing the living experience while minimizing environmental impact.

The Gorakhpur Farmhouse serves as a testament to thoughtful design and environmental stewardship. Its successful integration into the existing orchard highlights a commitment to sustainable practices and a deep appreciation for the inherent beauty of the site. The Ecological Tapestry of the Project's Location

Nestled at an elevation of 1,250 meters within a vibrant montane forest, the project site lies on the eastern slopes of the illustrious Llanganates National Park. This particular region, situated at the northern reaches of the Pastaza province, is a treasure trove of biodiversity, boasting a remarkable collection of around 800 species of vascular and endemic plants. The design of River Terrace profoundly acknowledges and celebrates this rich ecological context, seeking to minimize disturbance and enhance the natural beauty of the area.

It is strategically positioned on the historic high-pile dock of the Fuxing Island Shipyard Park, nestled within Shanghai's vibrant Yangpu District. Conceived as a supplementary public amenity, it offers a tranquil riverside retreat for both residents and visitors, while also serving as a dynamic venue for various events. The design draws profound inspiration from its surroundings: the towering high-pile dock, the imposing shipbuilding cranes, the utilitarian pump house, and the robust flood control wall collectively echo the profound industrial legacy of the venerable Zhonghua Shipyard. The monumental scale of the shipyard's machinery and infrastructure imbues the site with a unique duality of inertness and latent energy. The aspiration behind the Floating Cabin was to channel this intrinsic character into its architectural form, transforming it into a contemporary spatial experience that transcends conventional building typologies. The term 'Cabin' simultaneously evokes the stark, functional beauty of industrial machinery and signifies a flexible enclosure adaptable to diverse functions. Meanwhile, 'floating' poetically captures its visually suspended structural quality, offering a sense of lightness and detachment.

The Floating Cabin: Reimagining Industrial Heritage for Public Engagement

In a bold move to invigorate public spaces and honor its industrial past, the city of Shanghai will unveil the innovative Floating Cabin at the 2025 Urban Space Art Season. Designed by the visionary architects at Atelier Wen'Arch, this 144 square meter pavilion, slated for completion in 2025, is strategically erected on the high-pile dock of the Fuxing Island Shipyard Park in the Yangpu District. The project, skillfully engineered by AND Office for structural design and constructed by Shanghai Tongcheng Building Technology & Engineering Co, Ltd., with structural drawings by TJAD, is a testament to adaptive reuse and architectural ingenuity. The Floating Cabin is more than just a structure; it is a conceptual bridge between Shanghai's industrial heritage and its future as a hub for art and community. The design consciously integrates elements reminiscent of the shipyard's mechanical grandeur, from the imposing cranes to the robust flood control walls, creating a dialogue between past and present.
