Architectural Harmony with the Coastal Environment
Nestled along the Atlantic shoreline of Nova Scotia, the East River Residence, a creation of Omar Gandhi Architects, presents itself as a long, slender structure delicately positioned over a rocky hollow. This dwelling was conceived for a couple transitioning from city life in Montreal, seeking a slower pace intertwined with the raw beauty of the coastline. The design thoughtfully allows the natural terrain to flow beneath, minimizing disruption to the existing ecosystem.
A Bridging Structure Amidst Nature's Embrace
As one approaches the property through the dense coastal woodlands, the residence gradually reveals itself amidst granite formations and sparse vegetation. The building extends gracefully between two elevated landforms, establishing a minimal footprint where it meets the ground. Omar Gandhi Architects conceptualized this home as a bridge, preserving the site's natural contours while framing expansive vistas towards the boundless horizon.
Elevated Living and Material Choices
The structure is supported by slender steel pillars, raising the main volume above the sand and stone, enabling indigenous grasses and moss to thrive undisturbed below. From a distance, the metallic roof appears as a singular silver expanse against the sky, while the use of cedar cladding introduces a sense of warmth and appropriate scale to the lower sections of the building. This combination of materials harmonizes with the rugged beauty of the surrounding environment.
Thoughtful Design for Light and Shelter
An offset gable, clad in metal, stretches along the length of the residence. Its form dynamically adjusts to accommodate various programmatic elements and control natural light. Clerestory windows tucked beneath the ridge provide a gentle, diffused illumination throughout the interior spaces. Extended overhangs offer protection from the sun and wind, creating sheltered zones along the exterior. The roof's varying height accommodates large rock formations and captures sweeping views in certain areas, while lowering in others to create more intimate living spaces, fostering a sense of cozy enclosure.
An Interior Palette Reflecting the Landscape
Inside the East River Residence, Omar Gandhi Architects has meticulously curated a refined material palette that extends the exterior's natural hues indoors. Light-toned wooden floors, cedar-paneled walls, and understated masonry subtly echo the grays and tans prevalent in the local rock and sand. A central circulation path parallels the expansive glazing, directing movement from the more private rooms towards the communal areas that open directly onto the ocean.
Connecting with the Ocean's Rhythms
A built-in fireplace and integrated wood storage form a central focal point within the living areas, providing a robust gathering spot during the colder months. Large glass panels effortlessly draw the captivating landscape deep into the heart of the home. Dining and living spaces offer unobstructed views of the water through thin, almost invisible window frames, maintaining a direct and immersive connection with the horizon. Terraces and small outdoor niches, carved between existing stones, extend the living space outwards. A pathway ultimately leads to a timber dock, further reinforcing a daily connection with the majestic Atlantic tides.
