Montel, who previously collaborated with Hermès on their Tokyo and Paris flagships, describes the sprawling London store as a "maison de poupée," or dollhouse. Due to strict preservation regulations imposed by the city's landmarks commission, which protect the 1769 buildings, Montel was unable to alter the existing floor or ceiling heights. Instead, he ingeniously integrated bridges, passageways, and a Norman Foster spiral staircase from the early 2000s, which gracefully winds through the central courtyard. Montel explains, "Inside, the windows are not aligned, and there's different perspectives. It's quite playful. We prefer a journey of discovery with no logic, and tried to invite people to get lost." This design philosophy encourages visitors to explore and engage with the space in an unconventional way.
A Thoughtful Layout and Global Expansion
Despite its labyrinthine appearance, the store's interior is systematically organized. Each of Hermès' 16 métiers, or product divisions, is color-coded and grouped within rooms painted in corresponding hues—for instance, yellow for jewelry and red for leather goods. The space is further enriched with equine paintings and historical curiosities from the collection of Émile Hermès, the founder's grandson, along with notable artworks by artists like Martin Parr. These elements serve to remind customers of the brand's deep French heritage. Looking ahead, Hermès plans to open a smaller location in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, in September, followed by a larger flagship in Geneva later in the fall, continuing its global expansion.
Admiralty Arch Transformed into Waldorf Astoria London: A Historic Restoration Unveiled
In London, the scaffolding has been removed from the historic Admiralty Arch, offering the first glimpse of the future home of the city's new Waldorf Astoria hotel. As part of its extensive update, the Waldorf Astoria has painstakingly conserved the limestone exterior. The distinctive three arches that connect The Mall to Trafalgar Square have been carefully maintained, while long-painted-over brass details have been uncovered, iron gates refreshed, and lead dormers replaced, among other sensitive adjustments. When the 114-room Waldorf Astoria London - Admiralty Arch opens this fall, it will be the first time the public has had access to the building. Visitors can now admire the two new sculptures of maidens that fill previously blank facade brackets, completing Webb's original artistic vision.
