Al Maha Island, a 230,000 m² man-made landmass off the coast of Lusail, Qatar, officially opened in 2022 as a premier destination for leisure and entertainment. The island is now being thoughtfully developed as part of Lusail City's expansive 38 km² blueprint, which envisions 19 distinct districts. This "smart city" initiative is designed to support an anticipated population of 450,000 residents, providing extensive recreational, hospitality, entertainment, and retail amenities. The choice of Lusail as the city's name pays homage to the local Al Wasil plant, a theme echoed in the landscape architecture that incorporates drought-resistant native flora within its public spaces. Inside, a crescent-shaped internal street, illuminated by natural overhead light, connects the museum's various facilities, including its entrances, central lobby, library, auditorium, retail space, café, and prayer area. The exterior features an earthy facade with a sandy texture, where deeply recessed windows are cut into the walls to shield the interiors from direct sunlight. The internal aesthetic is further enhanced by tactile materials such as polished plaster for the staircase, reflective metal in the prayer space, wood-paneled library walls, and comfortable, cushioned niches. A key aspect of the museum's mission is to collaborate with local and regional artisans, ensuring the preservation and promotion of traditional crafts.

The museum will proudly display Qatar Museums' significant collection of Orientalist paintings, featuring renowned artists like Titian, Eugène Delacroix, Gustav Bauernfeind, Jean-Léon Gérôme, Etienne Dinet, and Paul Klee. This Orientalist collection, central to the museum's narrative, spans European art from the 16th to the 19th centuries.
