(ZDC) has unveiled 'OAS/S-AETHER,' a significant public art installation for the 2026 Aranya Theater Festival's 'Migratory Birds 300' section. This is ZDC's third contribution to the festival, developed in collaboration with Non-Essential Cooperation and Dao Niang, aligning with the festival's theme of 'Gaze & Adventure.' The project, initiated by Liu Chang, Zhu Sha, Zheng Jing, and Chen Minghao, gathers 300 creators for an immersive experience centered on redefinition, sustainability, environmental awareness, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

The installation's name, AETHER, references the classical concept of the fifth element, bridging nature and technology, reality and imagination. It explores contemporary communication and future civilizations. As part of ZDC's ongoing OAS/S series, this project investigates human civilization's evolution through a minimalist geometric design and a vast public structure that blurs the lines between sculpture and architecture. Its wing-like form and luminous elements create a compelling dialogue with the surrounding landscape and sky.

Zhide Architectural Design Consulting (Beijing) Co., Ltd. (ZDC) created 'OAS/S-AETHER,' a monumental artwork for the 2026 Aranya Theater Festival. This piece, ZDC's third for the festival, explores the convergence of nature and technology, reality and imagination, within the context of contemporary communication and future societies. Its design, inspired by the 'fifth element' of ether, employs a restrained geometric language to symbolize human civilization's journey, functioning as both sculpture and architecture on the festival grounds.

The structure is composed of interconnected metal rods that expand symmetrically from a central point, gracefully extending towards the earth like wings poised for flight. This open framework ensures visual transparency, allowing seamless integration with the coastal environment. The geometric precision provides structural stability while maintaining a light, ethereal quality, enabling unimpeded views and movement through the installation. Transparent acrylic lightboxes embedded within the metal lattice illuminate the structure, accentuating its upward trajectory and transforming its appearance after dusk. Living plants within these illuminated sections introduce organic elements, fostering a rich interplay between vegetation, light, and metal. At its core, copper plates are intricately engraved with the emblem of Non-Essential Cooperation. Ichizu: Integrating Heritage and Modernity in Osaka's Community Space

In the historic Iguchido district of Ikeda, Osaka, a remarkable architectural transformation has breathed new life into two long-standing, once-forgotten timber structures. Spearheaded by Coil Kazuteru Matumura Architects, this ambitious project, named "Ichizu," has converted these dilapidated outbuildings, hidden behind a family residence, into a dynamic shared kitchen and communal area. This endeavor marks the first step in a phased strategy to revitalize an inherited family estate, making it accessible to the public while meticulously safeguarding its distinctive character and the rich tapestry of its history.

The property, which has been passed down through generations, encompasses a parking zone, the primary dwelling, and a storehouse situated facing the street. Beyond these existing structures, an open field stretches towards the rear of the land, where the two small wooden outbuildings, once obscured by dense vegetation, stand. These modest constructions had previously served as temporary accommodation for those in need, provided by the client's grandfather, before falling into disuse and succumbing to the encroachment of nature over many years.

Instead of opting for demolition and reconstruction, or a complete restoration to a pristine earlier state, the architectural vision for Ichizu focused on embracing and highlighting the physical imprints of time etched into the site. The existing weathered corrugated steel cladding, a silent witness to the property's long narrative, was consciously retained. This decision allows the visible signs of age to serve as a tangible record of its evolution. Complementing these historical elements, new architectural interventions were introduced, specifically designed to meet the demands of modern utility and resilience. Features such as doors, internal finishes, and kitchen facilities were meticulously upgraded using bespoke timber joinery, lauan plywood, stainless steel, and mill-scale steel. This carefully curated material palette intentionally establishes a subtle yet striking contrast between the newly integrated components and the patinated surfaces of the original structures, fostering a harmonious dialogue where the old and the new coexist seamlessly.

The journey through the Ichizu property mirrors its established layout. Guests navigate past the main house and the storehouse before arriving at the open field, where the newly reimagined buildings gradually come into view. This sequential unfolding preserves the spatial depth inherent to the site, simultaneously introducing new public activities into an area that had historically remained private. Today, Ichizu functions not only as a communal kitchen but also as a welcoming space for visitors to gather, relax, or simply enjoy the adjacent garden. This project is an integral part of a broader, incremental approach aimed at reactivating the entire estate. The previously underutilized field has been transformed into Wells Garden, a shared green space, while the existing street-facing storehouse has undergone a sensitive renovation and now operates as Tsuru no Negoto, a specialized shop offering antiques and vintage apparel. While each of these components currently operates independently, future plans include the construction of an additional kitchen near the main residence, which will serve to further integrate food preparation, the garden, and various communal activities throughout the property.

The underlying philosophy of this project deviates from a singular, comprehensive redevelopment. Instead, it involves assigning fresh purposes to the existing buildings and landscape over an extended period. The name "Ichizu," which translates to steadfast dedication, beautifully encapsulates the intention behind this endeavor: to cherish and preserve inherited architecture, adapting it for future generations through thoughtful, site-specific transformations. Beyond the architectural design itself, Studio Coil Kazuteru Matumura Architects also played a pivotal role in developing the distinct visual identities and logos for Ichizu, Wells Garden, and Tsuru no Negoto. Furthermore, the client actively participated in the inaugural Ikeda Women's Network (IWN) capacity-building program, organized by the City of Ikeda, and was awarded an IWN Challenge Grant, providing crucial support for the overarching initiative to rejuvenate the property.
