Cafe. MADA in the Little Garden / BodinChapa Architects

This architectural project, named Cafe. MADA in the Little Garden, embodies a serene retreat from the daily hustle. The primary objective for the owner was to create a lasting sanctuary for family members, prioritizing a peaceful and calm atmosphere. This vision guided the selection of a site that could accommodate both family living and a potential business venture, culminating in the creation of a café and future villa set within a picturesque lychee orchard. The design fosters a space for relaxation, contemplation, and quiet pleasure, seamlessly integrating with its natural surroundings.
Situated in Chiang Rai, Thailand, the project was completed in 2025 by BodinChapa Architects, with Phitchapa Lothong and Bodin Mueanglue leading the design team. Covering an area of 254 square meters, the cafe and villa are a testament to thoughtful design that harmonizes with nature. The choice of location within a lychee orchard underscores the desire for an environment rich in natural beauty and tranquility. This setting not only provides a stunning backdrop but also enhances the overall experience of peace and seclusion for visitors and residents alike.
The design philosophy behind Cafe. MADA focuses on creating an intimate connection with the natural world. The architects utilized materials that blend effortlessly with the environment, such as concrete and wood, which add warmth and an organic feel to the structures. The integration of these elements ensures that the buildings do not overpower the landscape but rather become an extension of it. The layout encourages a flow between indoor and outdoor spaces, allowing ample natural light and views of the surrounding orchard to permeate the interior. This thoughtful approach supports the project's aim of being a place for quiet enjoyment and reflection, where the beauty of nature can be appreciated from every vantage point.
The concept extends beyond just aesthetic appeal, aiming to foster a sense of well-being and calmness. Every detail, from the material selection to the spatial arrangement, contributes to an atmosphere that encourages relaxation and respite. The cafe provides a welcoming space for guests to enjoy refreshments amidst the soothing environment, while the planned villa will offer a more permanent solution for family members seeking an escape from urban life. This dual functionality ensures the project's sustainability and relevance, catering to both occasional visitors and long-term residents seeking a harmonious balance with nature. The overall design narrative is one of peaceful coexistence, where architecture enhances the natural beauty rather than detracting from it, creating a truly unique and enriching experience.
