The project, managed by the architectural firm Margine, aims to honor the building's rich past while preparing it for a new chapter of hospitality, merging tradition with modern use.
Situated between Lecce and Vernole, amidst ancient olive groves and a short distance from the coastline, Masseria Caronte holds a deep connection to its rural surroundings. For centuries, it served as a vital agricultural hub, supporting local livelihoods through sheep farming and the production of wool and yarn. However, like many historical properties, it experienced periods of varying business ventures and eventual abandonment, leading to numerous alterations that obscured its original character.
The current renovation, initiated by a consortium of young local entrepreneurs and entrusted to Margine, focuses on reversing these accumulated changes. The core vision is to dismantle non-original additions and carefully restore the farmhouse's inherent grandeur. This involves a delicate balance of preserving historical elements and introducing modern amenities necessary for a high-end restaurant.
